Cocktails for a Cause!

Birthday Bash to Benefit West Virginians with Alzheimer’s Disease

A capacity crowd is again expected to fill The Vault in downtown Charleston Feb. 6 to raise awareness of the impact of Alzheimer’s disease as part of the third annual Reagan Birthday Bash to benefit the Alzheimer's Association, West Virginia Chapter.

The cocktail party honors Ronald Reagan, the original Alzheimer's Champion and many other champions who MOVE the cause forward in West Virginia. The Reagan Birthday Bash kicks off at 8 p.m. and will include drink specials, a complimentary toast and 50/50 drawing. The $10 door cover charge from 8-10 p.m. will benefit the Alzheimer’s Association, West Virginia Chapter

The event was created to target a younger-than-40 crowd who may not necessarily be concerned with Alzheimer’s disease right now despite its prevalence and potential to touch so many lives.

“I started volunteering with the Alzheimer’s Association, which has been incredibly rewarding, because my grandfather suffers from this terrible disease,” said Carol Kelley Miller, a birthday bash co-host from Cross Lanes. “I think it’s important for people of all ages to become involved in raising awareness because you never know when someone close to you will be diagnosed.”

President Reagan, born Feb. 6, 1911, started a revolution in 1983 by kicking off the first awareness campaign for Alzheimer's disease. He recognized the enormous need for awareness and research funding so he proclaimed November as National Alzheimer's Disease Month. Since then, the number of individuals facing the disease rose from 2 million Americans to more than 5 million, including 48,000 here in West Virginia. President Reagan was one of the first public figures to openly discuss being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.

The Alzheimer's Association, West Virginia Chapter is the only voluntary health organization in West Virginia dedicated to providing support, education, outreach and advocacy for individuals with Alzheimer's disease, their families, caregivers and communities.
